What is Fate/Grand Order anyways?
Released in 2015 in Japan, Fate/Grand Order (often abbreviated as fgo) is a mobile spin-off of Type-Moon's Fate/Stay Night series. In its 10 years of service they've released (as of 01/13/26) 450 playable Servants and has accumulated over 33 million downloads.
Basic Terminology
Mage: Also translated as magus, is the term for practitioners of magecraft.
Master: The term used to describe someone, typically a mage, who becomes a participant of a Holy Grail War; possesses command spells and a contract with a Servant.
Servant: A type of spirit summoned by a master, typically because of a Holy Grail War. While most Servants summoned are 'heroic spirits' (people who have done great deeds in their life and are worshiped/celebrated) it is possible for other types of spirits (such as divine spirits and phantoms) to be summoned as a Servant.
Noble-Phantasm: Often abbreviated as np, it is the 'symbol'/'representative' of a spirit used as a powerful ability. In the case of fgo, nps are the 'ultimate move' of a Servant and are the main incentive to roll for multiple copies of a Servant.
Story
Starting in 2015, you play as Ritsuka Fujimaru (nicknamed by fans as Gudao for the male version, and Gudako for the female version), one of 48 Master candidates recruited into the Chaldea Security Organization. After a bombing attack, you're the only candidate to survive and with the other survivors of Chaldea, you continue the organization's goal of preventing the "certain extinction" of the human race.
Gameplay
F/GO is a card based rpg, so most of the gameplay is combat and story segments. Battles typically comprises of 3 waves and 3 enemies per stage, however there are variations to this formula whether it be for challenge or story reasons (such as having more than 3 enemies in a wave with a maximum of 6 enemies on screen at once, more or less than three waves, and turn limits). The player uses a team comprising of 6 Servants: 3 in the starting team and 3 sub-members. One of these 6 Servants is a support Servant from a friend, stranger, or story NPC. But again this formula is sometimes changed for challange/story reasons (no supports, only # Servants, a required Servant, etc.)
